FUNZONE YOUTH PROVISION GIVEN MAJOR BOOST WITH NEW GRANT FROM THE MILLION HOURS FUND 

Funding of more than £80,000 will enable the Funzone programme to offer an additional 600+ hours of youth activities over a two-year period 

Stirchley and Brookside Parish Council has been awarded a grant of more than £80,000 by the Million Hours Fund to help extend the provision its FunZone programme activities over the next two years. 

FunZone provides a variety of activities including sports and outdoor activities as well as help with practical life skills. These extra sessions are aimed at young people aged between 11 and 18 years old or up to 25 years if they have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).  

Nikki Boronski, Youth Provision Officer for Stirchley and Brookside Parish Council, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded this funding which will enable us to reach even more young people giving them positive things to do such as trying a new sport or learning new skills. FunZone offers safe and secure spaces where youngsters can be themselves, join in with activities, speak to youth workers and build up positive relationships with peers and adults. 

“We plan to add an additional six hours a week to our existing timetable. The extra sessions will compliment the FunZone sessions currently run by Stirchley and Brookside Parish Council but will be available to more young people across The Nedge ward which includes Hollinswood and Randlay. Thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund and the Government for making this possible.” 

Stirchley and Brookside Parish Council and Hollinswood and Randlay Parish Council will be providing sports venues, where coaches from Allsports Coaches Coaching Academy (ACCA) and Active Future Telford will provide opportunities for local young people. Extra sessions will be available on Friday evenings in Hollinswood and on Saturday mornings in Stirchley. 

The Million Hours Fund is a £22 million jointly funded initiative from the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK. The programme funds organisations to provide positive activities for young people in areas with high levels of antisocial behaviour.

Funzone is a youth club which caters for ages 5 - 16 years.

The groups are run by Parish Council staff members Nikki B, Nikki L and Andrea at The Sambrook Centre in Stirchley. For a voluntary contribution of just £1 our young people will be involved in activities and are provided with a snack and refreshments.

Football sessions are hosted by AFC Telford Coaches and we are also affiliated to Nuffield Health.
